Protect WT Jackson

The APS Comprehensive Long Range Facilities Plan proposes eliminating all dual-campus models, which would lead to significant changes to WT Jackson Elementary, potentially changing the format and zoning of the school dramatically.

As one of the highest performing schools in the cluster with projected enrollment growth, Jackson stands to be disproportionately and unnecessarily impacted by this plan.

Understand the Scenarios

SCENARIO 1

Jackson will consolidate to Main campus, which is in very good condition and is designed for children this age. This option preserves the community with least cost and disruption.

SCENARIO 2

Both Jackson buildings will close and the school will move to the Sutton 6th grade campus, which will require significant retrofitting to accommodate PK-5 children. This scenario will require rezoning and it may become much larger.

SCENARIO 3

Both Jackson buildings will close and the school will move to the Sutton 6th grade campus in a new PK-8 format. The building requires retrofitting to accommodate young children and there is much uncertainty in the programming and zoning for this scenario.

OUR RESPONSE

The Jackson community believes:

  • Our priority is keeping our current Warren T Jackson community together: families, teachers, and staff.

  • The projected impact to students and student outcomes should be added to this proposal. Jackson is a high performing school with CCRPI scores in the 90’s. The current model is working for us.

  • Scenario 1 (consolidating both Jackson campuses to our Main Campus building) is the least harmful to Jackson. It allows for continuity of care of our students, keeps our teachers and staff together, and provides the most certainty in concept and implementation timeline.

  • Our school had more than 700 students in 2019. During Covid and the subsequent year of virtual learning, we lost over 200 students to private schools. This does not rebound quickly but it CAN rebound. If we are consolidated to Main campus, we request that our Primary campus be held in reserve in the event enrollment again justifies needing the space. We see lower grade enrollments increasing year over year.

  • It is impossible to know the true impact to our school, families, and neighborhoods without proposed boundaries. We do not want any of our existing families to be zoned out.

  • The North Atlanta Cluster has the largest student population, the second lowest cost per pupil, and high performing schools.  Every school in our cluster has CCRPI scores above the APS district average, many are well above. These proposals disproportionately impact the north Atlanta cluster and we are putting a successful model at risk.
